| Commemorating Miguel Ángel Asturias ISLA wishes to honor Guatemala's 1967 Nobel Literature prize laureate Miguel Ángel Asturias during the commemoration of the 100 years of his birth (1899-1999). Asturias is one of Latin America's foremost writers. His groundbreaking novel El señor presidente (Mr. President, written in 1933 and first published in Mexico in 1946) is an impassioned critique of power's ruthless and corrupt ways. Other important works are Leyendas de Guatemala (Legends of Guatemala, 1930) and Hombres de maíz (Men of Maize, published in 1949). Asturias was an ardent supporter of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War, as well as of the Cuban Revolution. He spent many years in exile from his home country, living in France and Mexico.
